매쉬업이란? what is mash up?

이 바닥 사람들이 요즘 매쉬업(mash-up)이란 단어를 흔하게 쓰고 있는데 개념을 제대로 세우진 못하고 일단 따라 쓰는 경향이 강한 것 같다. 매쉬업은 원 단어대로 번역하면 "콘텐트를 뒤섞는다"는 의미다. 다만 웹 2.0에서 이 단어는 단서가 붙는데 부가가치(added value)를 재생산한다는 것이다. 부가가치는 꼭 돈을 의미하지는 않는다.

위키피디어에는 이런 식으로 정의하고 있다.

Bastard pop is a musical genre which, in its purest form, consists of the combination (usually by digital means) of the music from one song with the acapella from another. Typically, the music and vocals belong to completely different genres. At their best, bastard pop songs strive for musical epiphanies that add up to considerably more than the sum of their parts.

웹 2.0에서 써 먹는 정의와는 좀 차이가 있다. www.whatis.com에서는 어떻게 정의하고 있을까? IT 관련 용어에 대해서는 위키피디어보다 훨씬 잘 정리된 DB를 제공하는 곳 답게 아주 상세히 정리하고 있다.

A mash-up is a Web page or application that integrates complementary elements from two or more sources. Mash-ups are often created by using a development approach called Ajax. Here's a sampling of mash-up Web sites:

• Panoramio: a mash-up of Google Maps and geopositioned photographs of locations
• Hiking Outpost: a mash-up of Amazon and online hiking information resources

Like blogs, vlogs and tagging, mash-ups are part of an ongoing shift towards more a more interactive and participatory Web (Web 2.0) with more user-defined content and services. According to Aaron Boodman, quoted in BusinessWeek online, "The Web was originally designed to be mashed up. The technology is finally growing up and making it possible."

The term mash-up originated in the music industry. It is sometimes spelled mashup.

가끔 지식in도 쓸모가 있는데 이번이 그런 경우다. 매쉬업에 대한 적절한 한글 답변을 찾을 수 있었다. 지식in의 답변 결과 링크는 계속 변하기 때문에 검색 쿼리를 링크했다.

원론적으로 봤을 때 내가 요즘 만들고 있는 사이트도 매쉬업이다. 나는 웹 유틸리티라고 이야기하며 다니지만 ;-)
